Yes, this is very unnerving. This story first aired in February 2004 on WHDH-TV Boston. The new smoke detectors that are said to be available on the market in the next few months - the KidSmart Vocal Smoke Detector made by Signal One Safety from Atlanta Georgia. Signal One appears to be out of business as they are seemingly unreachable. The number listed on their website is not their number anymore and I have emailed them requesting more info - still waiting for a response. I have also spoken with smoke detector resellers and they have also been unable to reach the company. Amazon is currently out of stock, along with any other reseller that I have come across with no estimated re-stock date. It looks like a great product - I had planned on buying at least 2 right away. If anyone has more info on this, please let us know. For the mean time, I have researched a smoke detector by First Alert that is a vocal smoke detector. It does not let you program your own voice it in, but it does audibly tell you that there is a fire - or carbon monoxide detection, and if you replace all your hardwired smoke detectors with this unit, it even tells you audibly which room the smoke or CO was detected! It is a fairly new product Model # SC7010BV by First Alert 1-800-323-9005 that sells between $70 - $100/ea +tax, shipping & handling and is hardwired with battery backup, smoke & CO detector, audible alert with location of smoke when programmed. Anyone with children should take the advice of this news broadcast and plan a fire drill. If the standard smoke detectors don't seem to wake up the kids, consider changing the alarms to something with an audible voice alert and retry the fire drill. Contact your local fire department for more information and assistance. Stay safe!
